U.S. State Department Calls on Russian Regime to Free Pichugin via Twitter
June 18, 2018
Today, the U.S. State Department expressly called for Alexey Pichugin’s release via Twitter.
As part of a tweet-chain expressing the United States’ concern regarding the growing number of political and religious prisoners held by the Russian government, Heather Nauert, spokesperson for the State Department wrote:
We call on #Russia to finally release Aleksey #Pichugin, in jail since 2003 on a life sentence. #FreePichugin
The tweet follows the recent release of an updated report by Russian human rights group Memorial Human Rights Center listing individuals recognized as political prisoners in Russia, which once more included Mr. Pichugin as the longest-serving political prisoner.
