U.S. Senator Marco Rubio Calls for Putin to Release Alexey Pichugin
August 17, 2018
Today, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) took to Twitter and called for Russian President Vladimir Putin to release Alexey Pichugin, Russia’s longest-serving political prisoner.
Alexey #Pichugin, the longest-held political prisoner in #Russia, should be released immediately. Putin and his cronies continue to blatantly violate the rights of Russian citizens with impunity. #ExpressionNOToppression
Rubio is joining a growing list of high-profile public figures and human rights advocates from all over the world who are advocating on Mr. Pichugin’s behalf.
Most recently, three former ministers of justice of Germany, Israel and Canada drew attention to Mr. Pichugin’s plight via an ad in the British daily The Guardian.
