Russian Human Rights Group Once More Recognizes Alexey Pichugin as Political Prisoner
At the end of May, renowned Russian human rights group Memorial Human Rights Center released its updated list of individuals recognized as political prisoners.
Not surprisingly, Alexey Pichugin – wrongfully imprisoned and a victim of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s quest to expropriate and destroy Yukos and its leadership since 2003 – has once more made Memorial’s list.
Unlike the other political prisoners listed, most of whom were arrested in recent years, Mr. Pichugin holds the dubious honor of being Russia’s longest-serving political prisoner.
This month marks the 15th anniversary of Mr. Pichugin’s arrest, who will turn 56 years old in July. To date, he has spent more than a third of his adult life behind bars — all for abiding by his conscience and refusing to provide false testimony against Mr. Putin’s foes.
