April 2, 2020

On March 10, Alexey Pichugin, who has been wrongfully imprisoned for more than 6,100 days, filed a new petition for clemency addressed to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.  His two prior pardon requests in made in 2015 and 2017, respectively, had been rejected.

In his request, Pichugin stressed that he has already spent more than sixteen years and nine months in prison. He asked that it be taken into account that his mother turned 81 in February, and that the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers  recommended that he be pardoned.

Yukos staffer Alexey Pichugin, sentenced to life, wrote another pardon request

March 30, 2020

On March 10, former Yukos security staffer Alexey Pichugin, who is serving life in prison, filed a pardon request addressed to President Vladimir Putin.

Pichugin’s attorney Ksenia Kostromina told Novaya Gazeta that in his request Pichugin reminded that he has already spent over 16 years and 9 months in prison.

Pichugin asked that it be taken into account that his mother turned 81 in February, and that the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers  recommended that he be pardoned.

Pichugin has already filed two such motions with Vladimir Putin, and his mother Alla Pichugina (through Novaya Gazeta) also asked that her son be pardoned. However, the convict was denied pardon.

To remind readers, in 2007 Moscow City Court convicted Alexey Pichugin and sentenced him to life in prison on charges of organizing murders in Yukos’ interests. He did not admit his guilt; currently he is at Federal Correctional Facility No. 6 in Orenburg Region.
