Leonid Nevzlin on Alexey Pichugin’s birthday
July 25, 2021
Today is Alexey Pichugin’s birthday. Leonid Nevzlin congratulates Alexey and comments:
Today, Alexey Pichugin turns 59. He was 40 when arrested. Nothing will replace the almost 20 years of a life stolen. This is a tragedy, a catastrophe that many of us have in our minds and in our hearts. It’s impossible not to think about Alexey every day. It’s very hard to know, to understand, to feel what he has to endure day after day, guiltless, in jail year after year. What he has to go through now that he’s been taken to the Lefortovo jail and is not being allowed to see either his family or human rights advocates. But there is faith – faith in God, in justice, and there are friends and colleagues who also have faith, and who are waiting. And that means there is hope. I wish Alexey and his mom lots of health and lots of strength. And of course freedom. At any price. Freedom, the opportunity to hug your family every day, to walk in the street, are priceless. And those guilty of the torturous ordeal, the sadists in uniforms and robes, those sitting in the Kremlin and those just sitting in “offices” will no doubt be punished.
