Audio: NPR’s All Things Considered on Human Rights Groups Calling For Response To Russia’s Rising Number Of Political Prisoners

May 2, 2019

In an audio segment for NPR’s All Things Considered broadcast on April 29, 2019, Michele Kelemen reports on the push by human rights groups – both Russian and international – to lobby the U.S. and others to punish Russian officials they say are responsible for the sharp increase in the number of political prisoners under the Putin regime.

The clip features audio from Vladimir Kara-Murza of the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom, Sergey Davidis of the Memorial Human Rights Center in Moscow, and Natalia Arno of the Free Russia Foundation.

Kelemen’s coverage comes on the heels of the release of a new study authored by various human rights groups on “The Kremlin’s Political Prisoners,” in Washington, DC.

A copy of the report, which also discusses the fate of Alexey Pichugin, Russia’s longest-serving political prisoner, among more than 230 political prisoners currently held in Russia, can be accessed here.
