Alla Pichugina, Mother of Alexey Pichugin, is 80 Years Old Today
February 15, 2019
Today, February 15, marks the 80th birthday of Alla Nikolaevna Pichugina – Alexey Pichugin’s mother. This traditional day of celebration is for her a day of deep sadness.
Since Mr. Pichugin’s arrest and subsequent imprisonment in 2003, Mrs. Pichugina has suffered one of the hardest fates a mother can endure – physical separation from her own child, whom she, by her own account, has only been granted permission to visit twice every year – with a glass screen separating them.
Unable to celebrate her birthday with her son for the past sixteen years, Mrs. Pichugina has been unwavering in her love and support for Mr. Pichugin.
Last year, Mrs. Pichugina joined Mikhail Khodorkovsky, founder of the Open Russia movement and himself imprisoned for ten years by the Putin regime, calling on Amnesty International “to use its influence to fight for the longest-serving Russian political prisoner.”
Two years earlier, in 2016, Mrs. Pichugina had – unsuccessfully – appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to pardon her son.
To learn more about the pardon request and the emotional toll Mr. Pichugin’s unjust imprisonment has taken on both Mrs. Pichugina’s and her son’s lives, read “I haven’t been able to even hug my son for 13 years,” a translation of an article that originally appeared in Novaya Gazeta in October of 2016.
